The journal is an Academic journal, devoted to French studies in a broad sense. Together with its international Editorial Board and Advisory Board, the journal's editors accept articles for publication after a rigorous process of selection and peer assessment. == History ==
The journal was founded by the late James R. Lawler in 1963 as Essays in French literature and expanded its name in 2008 to ''Essays in French Literature and Culture'' as a way to open its pages to contemporary worldwide currents in French studies. The journal has been published in October of every year for the last fifty years with the 2013 issue being its 50th.
